Valentín "Vale" Herrera Montes, known as El Valiente, was born in Chicago, Illinois, and moved with his family to San Antonio, Texas, when he was just five years old. From a young age, Vale grew up between two beautiful worlds: the American city where he was born and the Mexican roots that shaped his heart, his values, and his way of seeing life.

A lifelong fan of Morelia’s beloved football club — known as Atlético Morelia, later as Monarcas Morelia, and today once again as Club Atlético Morelia — Don Rafael saw football as more than a game: it was a lesson in teamwork, perseverance, and standing by your team through every season. Through his passion for the club and the example he set, he taught Vale the importance of loyalty, hard work, humility, and never forgetting where your family comes from.

His mother, Doña Lupita Montes de Herrera, was born in Celaya, Guanajuato, and filled their home with warmth, love, faith, and the flavors of Mexico. Through her, Vale learned that family is more than the people you live with — family is where your story begins, where traditions are passed down, and where every meal, celebration, and memory carries meaning.

Some of Vale's most treasured childhood memories were the Christmas trips to Mexico to visit his grandparents. Those visits were filled with laughter, piñatas, music, cousins running around, long family gatherings, and the unforgettable smell of traditional Mexican food being prepared with love. For Vale, those trips were more than vacations. They were moments that connected him to his grandparents, his culture, his language, and the traditions that made him proud of who he was.

Crossing into Mexico always meant something special. It meant seeing family again. It meant hearing stories from the past. It meant celebrating traditions, sharing meals, enjoying the holidays, and feeling the joy of being surrounded by people who loved him. As Vale grew older, he realized that every paisano, every traveler, and every family crossing the border carries a story. Some travel to visit parents or grandparents.
