Mexico Pickup Truck Insurance for U.S.-Plated Trucks

Pickups are among the most common U.S.-plated vehicles crossing into Mexico and the ones most often stopped for a coverage check. Only a Mexican-issued policy satisfies that check.

This page is for half-ton, three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups traveling for tourism, family visits or long stays. Because trucks are often modified, loaded or towing, a few extra details matter when you quote.

    Who this coverage is for

    • Drivers taking a U.S.-plated pickup across the border for a trip or a long stay.
    • Owners towing a trailer, boat or camper that needs to be declared.
    • Overland travelers heading into Baja or the Sierra with a lifted or modified truck.
    • Frequent crossers who want an annual policy instead of one per trip.

    Protection categories available

Pickup coverage follows the same structure as passenger vehicles, with extra attention to value, modifications and anything you tow — all subject to carrier eligibility and the terms shown at quoting.

    Mexican liability (Responsabilidad Civil)

Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others in Mexico, up to your policy limit. This is the coverage Mexican authorities look for.

    Physical damage and theft

Available on full-coverage plans when the vehicle is eligible. Deductibles and exclusions are stated in the policy you receive at checkout.

    Legal assistance and bail bond

Legal support and bail bond services after a covered accident in Mexico, subject to policy terms.

    Roadside assistance

Towing, flat-tire help, jump-start, fuel delivery and locksmith service inside the covered travel area, subject to availability.

    Medical payments

Medical expenses for occupants of your vehicle after a covered accident, up to the limit shown on the policy.

    Towed unit coverage

A trailer, boat or camper towed behind the truck must be declared and is often insured separately. Confirm it during quoting.

Availability, coverage and pricing are subject to the vehicle, carrier eligibility and the policy terms, conditions and exclusions shown during quoting. Coverage is available only for eligible U.S.-plated vehicles. This page is general information, not a promise of coverage.

    How to get a quote

Have the trim, bed configuration and any permanent modification ready — they affect the stated value.

    1. Give us the vehicle details: year, make, model, current market value, plate and VIN.
    2. Choose your travel dates — terms run from one day to a full year.
    3. Pick liability only or full coverage and review limits, deductibles and price.
    4. Pay and download your policy and proof of coverage before you reach the border.

    Information you should have ready

    • Valid driver license for each driver you want listed.
    • Vehicle registration or title showing the plate and VIN.
    • Year, make, model and current value of the vehicle.
    • Trip start and end dates, and an email for your policy documents.
    • A Banjercito temporary import permit (TIP) if you travel beyond the free zone.
    • Details of any trailer or towed unit, including its own value and plate if applicable.
    • A list of permanent modifications such as lift kits, camper shells, racks or aftermarket wheels.

    Frequently asked questions

Is my trailer covered by the truck policy?

Not automatically. A towed trailer, boat or camper must be declared and often needs its own coverage. Ask while you quote so it appears on the documents.

Are modified or lifted trucks eligible?

Often yes, but the stated value must reflect the truck accurately and heavily modified units are reviewed case by case at quoting.

Does a commercial or work truck qualify?

Tourist policies are for private, non-commercial use. If the truck hauls goods for hire in Mexico, tell us before you buy so we can point you to the right product.

Do I need a temporary import permit for the truck?

In most cases yes beyond the free zone or Baja California, and the trailer may need its own permit. See our Banjercito guide.

How is the value of my truck determined?

Use the current actual cash value, not what you paid or what you owe. Under-insuring reduces what a physical damage claim can pay.
